Top Reasons Trucks Break Down (And How to Prevent Them)

posted on
Nobody wants to be stuck in a broken-down rig. Even though every driver prepares for these scenarios and does all they can to prevent breakdowns from happening, even the most experienced driver can find themselves stuck on the highway with an issue. Fortunately, many of the most common reasons for breakdowns can be prevented with regular maintenance and monitoring.Semi Repair in Florida and North Carolina

Tires: According to the Technology & Maintenance Council, tires cause over half of roadside breakdowns in big rigs. Most mechanics will tell you the most important element of any vehicle is the tires. Not properly maintaining your tires can mean decreased performance and can even be dangerous. Common reasons for tire failure include misaligned axles, low tread, and under inflation.

Fuel: Nobody thinks it will happen to them, but we see it all the time – truckers running out of fuel without a reserve. Remind yourself to periodically check your fuel gauge so that you don’t find yourself stranded until fuel arrives.

Brakes: Almost one-third of crashes involving semi-trucks are due to brake issues. Your disc and drum brakes are constantly exposed to heat and friction, which causes them to wear down if they are not maintained properly. Brake issues are usually caused by air leaks, water contamination (which causes air line freezing in the colder months), and external corrosion or wear.

Electrical/Battery Issues: The electrical system of any rig is composed of the starter motor, the battery, and the alternator. Anyone of these components failing will keep you off the road. Signs of a failing electrical system include: corroded battery connections, dim lights, strong odors, or clicking sounds when you attempt to turn over the ignition. Batteries last around 3-5 years in optimal conditions, but extreme heat or cold can lessen their lifespan.

Breakdowns cost time, and when you’re on the road, time is money. The first step to preventing breakdowns is implementing a preventative maintenance check program with all vehicles in the fleet. Keep records of who checked what, and when. Unfortunately, even the most prepared truckers experience breakdowns, and when that happens, you can call McGee Commercial Tire & Services for 24-Hour Road Service.
